It’s now the off-season. A time for rest, recovery, and… reflection? Absolutely! While you might be scaling back the intensity of your training, now is not the time to take a break from your mental game. It is the perfect time to dive deep into what worked and didn’t, gain valuable insights, and set yourself up for a breakthrough season next year. What’s the key to unlocking this potential? A performance journal.

As a triathlon coach specializing in mental skills training, I can see the transformative power of journaling. Journaling is more than just rehashing workouts; it’s a tool for self-discovery, growth, and peak performance.

Here are the top five reasons why you should start a performance journal routine this off-season:

1. Gain Clarity and Self-Awareness:

The off-season provides a much-needed opportunity to step back and analyze your past season. What were your biggest wins? Where did you struggle? What patterns emerge in your performance? Journaling enables you to identify your strengths, weaknesses, and limiting beliefs, clearing the path for improvement.

2. Set SMART Goals:

SMART goals are  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. With a clearer understanding of your past performance, you can evaluate what parts of your training process worked and didn’t work. Thus, you can set better process goals that help you achieve your outcome goals. A journal becomes a space to define your big, hairy goals, outline the path to those goals in your training plan, and track your progress.

3. Boost Motivation and Confidence:

Reviewing your journal entries can increase your motivation. Seeing how far you’ve come, acknowledging your accomplishments, and revisiting past challenges you’ve overcome can boost your confidence and invigorate your passion for the sport.

4. Develop Mental Toughness:

Journaling helps you develop crucial mental skills like self-awareness, emotional regulation, and focus. By documenting your thoughts and feelings, you learn to identify and manage negative self-talk, build resilience, and stay motivated even when circumstances get you down.

5. Enhance Your Training:

A performance journal isn’t just about the mental game. Use it to track your workouts, monitor your nutrition, and analyze your sleep patterns. This data provides valuable insights into your physical performance and helps you optimize your training plan.

How To Get Started:

No fancy notebook or app is required (though those can be helpful!). Grab a pen and paper, open a document on your computer or phone, and start writing. Here are some prompts to get you going:

  • List the highlights of your past season.
  • What were your biggest challenges?
  • List your outcome and process goals for next season.
  • What are you most proud of?
  • What areas do you need to work on?
  • List your biggest fears, and how can you overcome them?

Consistency is Key:

Aim to journal daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Make it a habit by tying it to something you do daily. The more you write, the more insights you’ll gain. Remember, your performance journal is a personal tool. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Just be honest with yourself and focus on what you want to achieve.

This off-season, invest in your mental game. Start a performance journal and unlock your true potential.
